MoveR: An Interactive Platform Supporting Visual-Motor Learning, Attention, and Sensorimotor Engagement for Autistic People

Autistic people bring a wide range of profiles, learning styles, and ways of interacting with their environment. Some may use distinctive approaches to exploring visual information, organizing movement, directing attention, or engaging in activities. These individual differences can shape participation in learning, daily activities, and social interaction, with substantial variation from one person to another.

 

Current research shows that perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes are closely connected throughout child development. Visual perception is not passive: it develops through an ongoing interaction among observation, action, movement, and adaptation to the environment. The ability to identify relevant information, explore a visual space, coordinate movement with what is perceived, and plan an action is fundamental to learning and participating in everyday life.

 

MoveR is an interactive platform for sensorimotor learning and practice. It creates experiences that connect visual information, body movement, and cognitive engagement. The platform helps professionals support autistic people as they build and practice functional skills that contribute to learning, independence, and meaningful participation.

 

MoveR does not seek to change autistic traits or « correct » a neurodevelopmental way of being. It offers a structured, adaptable, and motivating environment for exploring the connections among perception, movement, and cognition while respecting each person’s profile, preferences, and needs.

 

Research in cognitive neuroscience and developmental psychology has shown the importance of visual attention in learning. Exploring an environment, identifying relevant information, sustaining attention during an activity, and adjusting one’s gaze in a new situation are skills used in many everyday contexts. Autistic people may use different visual exploration strategies, including different ways of selecting and processing information in their environment.

 

Through interactive visual activities, MoveR provides opportunities to develop and practice visual attention, information search, visual scanning, perceptual discrimination, and adaptation to changes in the environment or in presentation speed. A key strength of this approach is that visual information is linked to action: the person does not simply look at information but responds through movement based on what they perceive.

 

This connection between perception and action is another central focus of MoveR: visual-motor integration. Human development relies on a continuous feedback loop between what we perceive and how we act. Visual-motor abilities contribute to many areas of life, including object manipulation, writing, spatial orientation, movement-based play, everyday independence, and school learning.

Movement-based approaches are receiving growing attention in support for autistic people because movement experiences can engage multiple abilities at the same time, including participation, planning, adaptation, and problem-solving. MoveR offers activities in which the person observes, makes sense of information, anticipates an action, and adjusts their movement toward a goal. This connection between movement and cognition creates an active, experience-based learning context.

 

Movement can also support executive-function skills such as cognitive flexibility, inhibition, planning, sequencing, organization, and adapting to a new direction. MoveR activities can be adjusted to support individualized progression based on each person’s abilities, preferences, and pace.

 

In communication, MoveR is not designed as a stand-alone language support tool, but it can provide a meaningful context for interaction. Current neurodiversity-affirming approaches emphasize natural, motivating, and shared experiences as a foundation for communication. Interactive activities can create opportunities for initiating, sharing attention, taking turns, understanding activity directions, and communicating around a shared action.

 

For occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, movement specialists, and other support professionals, MoveR provides an environment for structured, repeatable, and adaptable sensorimotor experiences. The goal is to support each person’s participation in everyday activities by developing functional skills through engaging experiences.

 

Future research on MoveR may build on several areas already explored in the scientific literature, including visual attention, visual-motor integration, movement-based support, engagement in learning, and communicative interaction.

 

MoveR reflects a modern, person-centered approach that considers the whole person and recognizes that perception, movement, cognition, and interaction are continuously connected. The goal is not to normalize anyone’s way of functioning, but to provide tools that help each person develop their own strategies, build on their strengths, and participate more fully in their environment.
